How to Send a Successful SMS Marketing Campaign - Part 1

How to Send a Successful SMS Marketing Campaign - Part 1

SMS marketing is the wave of the future

- that's what you've heard. But how can you make it work for you? How can you take advantage of texting for your business?

Get an SMS Service Provider

Mass texting is easy to do if you have a provider like EZ Texting, otherwise it can be a real pain in the neck. SMS service providers are capable of doing a lot more than just sending plain text messages. Many of the bulk SMS features have been designed to encourage feedback, generate engagement, and develop relationships. It's easy to get started. Just sign up, upload your contacts and you can be texting within minutes.

Set Goals for Your SMS Program

When you send an SMS message, you only have 160 characters of text and emojis to work with. It's a great way to deliver a specific message or alert, but it's not the best for telling a long, in-depth story. So, think about what you can do that will make a big impact:

  1. Send a special offer or coupon
  2. Let subscribers know about an upcoming event
  3. Remind them about a new opportunity

Remember, the best goals follow the SMART method:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

Keep Track of Your Texts

Think about the texts you want to send and how they will support your goals. Then consider making a quick spreadsheet with your ideas, so you can easily track them going forward. You can always make updates based on the results on your initial efforts:

  • The purpose of each text
  • A schedule for sending messages
  • Message type(s)
  • Target audience(s)
  • Goal or objective
  • Ways for measuring success
  • Places to make adjustments as needed
  • Assignments to team members when applicable

This plan will work best if you think of it as a living document you can continuously improve. Ideally, your texting plans also complement your other marketing plans and fit in with your overarching strategy.

Identify Your Brand Voice

Before you start writing your texts, make sure you think about your brand voice and how you'd like your texts to sound.

Will they be:

  • Humorous
  • Professional
  • Informal
  • Friendly
  • Excited

It is important to choose a brand voice that is cohesive with the rest of your marketing channels. Although texts use few words, your word choice will play a significant role in creating the tone of your texts. There are a few things you want to avoid, like being negative or too informal. It's best to avoid "text speak" and lots of abbreviations. You're in control of your brand, so start with something that's positive and motivates people to take action.
