The Challenge: Finding an Easy and Affordable Way to Manage Individual Donations
The BEF “Change the Course” campaign started as a partnership with NatGeo and Participant Media geared toward raising awareness about water conservation. Through this campaign, BEF invited individuals to make pledges to reduce their water consumption. With each individual pledge made the campaign and its corporate partners pledged to restore 1,000 gallons of water in depleted waterways throughout the U.S. and Mexico.
The kickoff campaign was so successful that BEF wanted to keep it going with subsequent partners, but to do so they needed a solution that allowed them to generate and manage pledges from individuals. With just one staff member dedicated to handling the administrative work, the solution needed to be both easy and affordable on a nonprofit budget.

Using text messaging was the natural solution for continuing the Change the Course campaign, since it would allow individuals to make pledges by simply sending a message from their phone. The Results: 16,500,000 Gallons of Restored Water
In one campaign, BEF partnered with Delta Airlines and the Atlanta International Airport, posting Change the Course signs throughout the Delta terminal. This signage invited individuals to text a unique keyword to an identified short code in order to make their pledge. That text campaign alone restored 16,500,000 gallons of water from the 16,500 texts received.
